Behind Santa Lupita

BEHIND SANTA LUPITA

Hand stitching and weaving has been passed from one Mexican generation to the next one for centuries, representing one of the country ́s most important heritage conservators. Due to its geographical size and climate variety, Mexican clothing is diverse in styles, materials and colours.

SANTA LUPITA has travelled all over the country, not only to find the most elaborate and beautiful garments, but also to understand how this tradition has been developing and what its current challenges are.

One of the most striking elements is the abscense of synthetical fibres and the continuous use of natural colours, which are still produced by women at their homes in remote areas of Mexico. Basically, the whole production process takes place at private homes, where women not only stitch and weave, but also take care of their kids and have the responsability for the well-being of their families.

However, in times of mass production and high price sensitivity of customers, this tradition has been abandoned by many women, who cannot afford a descent living standard for them and their families by just doing this activity. Thus, Mexican hand stitching and weaving are at risk of being lost forever.

Behind SANTA LUPITA, there is a mayor effort to establish new market opportunities for traditional handmade clothing from Mexico by rising the awarness of international customers towards it, hence securing the business attractivity of this tradition for Mexican artisans and consequently, making a contribution to preserve it.
